Arsenal Make Third Official Signing: Ospina Joins The Gunners As Keeper From Nice.

Head over to the club website for full details!

Ospina, who is the brother-in-law of James Rodriguez (lately transferred to Real Madrid) impressed massively with Colombia and Wenger, there to commentate on games, took a shine to him and spent matches commenting but also scouting him. Doubtless he was already aware the keeper was doing well in Ligue 1.

gun__1406443237_ospina5
And so cute!

He also comes for an amazing fee: only 3 million.

Ospina is a great goalkeeper. His stats are wonderful. He did it on the big stage. And he's there to challenge for top spot. Wenger has said so explicitly. Szczesny is the #1 - but Ospina will be there to keep him on his toes and will play should he prove to be better.

More pictures of him looking lovely in Arsenal colours are bound to show up.

But Arsenal are seriously doing well in this transfer window, aren't they? New forward in the very wonderful Alexis Sanchez, new rightback in Mathieu Debuchy, new young and exciting defensive cover arriving in the form of Calum Chambers, the club still looking at Sami Khedira, Morgan Schneiderlin, Lars Bender, and William Carvalho for the defensive midfield.

I think we can expect two more purchases this summer - and weeks before the transfer window closes, for once!

.

Update - from an actual reputable source. Chambers could arrive tomorrow.

Rumoured central defender is Nastasic of Man City for now. DMF rumours remain the same: Khedira, Bender, Carvalho, Schneiderlin.

This backs up rumours last night the club was looking at 6 players, and wanted to sign two of them before long.

Loïc Rémy’s move is off, Dejan Lovren signs, Daniel Agger to Barcelona?

Liverpool-transfers-1

Liverpool must reconsider their forward options in the summer transfer market after Loïc Rémy’s proposed £8m move from Queens Park Rangers collapsed on medical grounds, although the club strenthened their defence on Sunday night by signing Dejan Lovren from Southampton.

Rémy was expected to complete his switch from Loftus Road during Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States, having undergone a medical in Boston early last week. Personal terms had been agreed with the France international and the deal had progressed so far that Liverpool had offered the striker the No7 shirt vacated by Luis Suárez.

On Friday, the delay in confirming Rémy as Liverpool’s fifth summer signing was attributed to administrative issues but the club pulled out of the deal on Sunday. Liverpool declined to comment on the reasons for the deal’s collapse but their decision is understood to be final and the manager, Brendan Rodgers, will now consider alternative targets.

The Anfield club have signed Rickie Lambert from Southampton but require greater strength up front after the sale of Suárez to Barcelona for £75m. A release clause in Rémy’s contract with QPR made the former Marseille striker, who scored 14 Premier League goals on loan at Newcastle United last season, an attractive proposition to Rodgers as the manager seeks overall improvement to his squad. Wilfried Bony, the Swansea City striker, was under consideration before the move for the cheaper Rémy.

Liverpool have bought Lovren, a commanding central defender, for £20m. The Croatia international has become the club’s fifth summer signing – after Lambert, Adam Lallana, Emre Can and Lazar Markovic – having undergone a medical on Merseyside on Saturday.

But the collapse of the Rémy deal is the second serious setback for Rodgers in a matter of days after new £25m recruit Lallana suffered a knee-ligament injury in training. The former Southampton captain will miss the start of the new Premier League season, although he does not require surgery and is staying with the Liverpool squad in the US rather than returning to Melwood for treatment.

“It was very disappointing – it’s probably going to be four to six weeks,” said Rodgers before Liverpool’s pre-season friendly against Olympiakos in Chicago. “He has looked fantastic in training; it was just a very simple exercise with no pressure. The medical team are looking closely at that at the moment. We’re hopeful that he’ll come back fairly quickly but there’s no rush. He’s a fantastic player, we just need to get him back fit and well because it’s a long season.”

Meanwhile, a report in Spain has claimed Barcelona are considering making a £12m offer for the Liverpool defender Daniel Agger, whose Anfield future is in doubt amid the imminent arrival of Lovren.

So after a video of Basti singing a BVB chant stirred controversy. He has taken time out of his holiday to apologise in a video posted to his facebook.

I kinda feel bad for him. The way he's stood there, hands behind back, very defensive.

How is this playing out in Germany? Are people truly scandalised? Will it effect his chance to become Emperor? Does he have enemies? It seems a little odd that this video would surface now.

Another Arsenal cutie
From Arsenal.com

Tall and athletic, the versatile youngster started his career in midfield, but established himself at right back last season and can also play in the centre of defence. He is currently captain of England Under-19s.

Arsène Wenger said: "We are very pleased that Calum has agreed to join us. The way he adapted to the Premier League last season with Southampton at a young age shows that he has tremendous quality. He has a lot of the attributes that we look for in a young player and I am sure that he will do well with us.”

Chambers said: "I am so happy to be signing for Arsenal. They are a team I have much admired for their playing style, and a team who have been one of the top sides in Europe for many years. I'm looking forward to joining up with my new team-mates today and beginning preparation for the season ahead.

"I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone at Southampton FC for everything they have done for me and for making this move possible."

So - notes on the transfer season to this point:

Arsenal have Alexis Sanchez, Ospina, Chambers & Debuchy thus far. An attacking midfielder, two defenders, and our back-up keeper, in other words.

Arsenal have spent 60 million on these players, but have brought in 15 million so far and could bring in another 15-25 million with the sales of Joel Campbell (who I hope his sold with his profile so high at the moment) and possible Vermaelen.

So while this has looked like an expensive summer, that could be deceptive. And there's certainly money left, should Wenger wish it, for a striker and a defensive midfielder.

A final note: every other club is doing it - stealing from Southampton ;) - this summer - but Arsenal was doing it long before it was cool. Chambers joins Theo Walcott (2006) and Oxlade Chamberlain (2011) who are former Southampton Players at Arsenal who are now successful in the first team.

I notice Southampton has no tag. That seems almost appropriate at the rate they're being fleeced this year :(

FIFA and Putin Understand Each Other Very Well

blatter-putin-1

Last year the Kremlin published photographs of a meeting at which Gazprom (GAZP:RM), Russia’s state-controlled energy giant, became the highest-level sponsor of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the organization that runs international soccer. There was FIFA President Sepp Blatter, alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin, Gazprom Chief Executive Alexei Miller, and Vitaly Mutko, who is both head of the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Sport and a member of FIFA’s executive committee.

Just a group of guys who like soccer, hanging out.

“That’s a hell of a powerful network,” says Alan Tomlinson, a professor at Brighton University’s School of Sport & Service Management and the author of books and articles about FIFA. He believes that Putin understands FIFA in a way most other heads of state don’t. “The Russian story,” Tomlinson says, “is one of a planned, sustained, and resourced campaign to gain influence and affect people over a period.”

It is unprecedented, Tomlinson says, for a government minister such as Mutko also to sit on FIFA’s executive board. It is also, in theory, a violation FIFA’s own rules. Mutko ran Russia’s bid for the 2018 World Cup—and he also had a vote in the body that decided it.

Tomlinson lays out a timeline: In 2008, Russia created its Ministry of Sport, with Mutko at its head. In 2009, Mutko got a seat on FIFA’s executive committee. In 2010, the committee voted on the 2018 World Cup. Putin also likely held secret talks with two-thirds of the executive committee before the vote. “Putin has charisma,” says Tomlinson, “but he’s not showing up at the last minute.”

Contrast that with the effort that the U.K. put into a bid for the 2018 World Cup. Prince William, Prime Minister David Cameron, and prime footballer David Beckham flew to Geneva on a lobbying trip that the British press referred to as two toffs and a twerp. “The mystery to me is that some of those people believe they can make a difference by, say, a last-minute arrival and a pitch,” says Tomlinson.

Peter Rohlmann of PR Marketing, a German sports marketing consulting firm, points to Putin’s relationships with the International Olympic Committee and Formula 1, which will hold its first Grand Prix event in Russia this fall—in Sochi, of all places. Rohlmann also puts a number on Gazprom’s involvement with FIFA. For a four-year partner sponsorship, the company would have had to pay between $80 million and $100 million. This kind of involvement makes bribery irrelevant. Who needs an envelope full of cash when a state-owned company is already a top-level sponsor?

And once a decision is reached, there’s very little incentive for anyone involved in FIFA to change it. “My guess is that on the political side, once the FIFA executive committee has reached a decision, it is unlikely that any moral or humanitarian reasons can lead the committee to revoke that decision or have an influence on it,” says Rohlmann. Sponsors issue periodic slaps on the wrist, but as consumer-facing companies, they have an interest in the markets that FIFA has been choosing: Africa, South America, the Middle East, and Russia. (For more on sponsor apathy, see Ira Boudway’s Bloomberg Businessweek piece on the controversy around the 2022 Qatar World Cup.)

Even if FIFA’s sponsors were to collect enough dudgeon to do something about it, the same opacity that drives the organization’s decisions prevents any move to change its mind. Thirteen members of the executive board must agree to call a meeting. In other words, there’s a prevote on every subject before it can even be put to a vote, in the same body that Putin already so ably lobbied. And FIFA President Sepp Blatter, literally referred to in the organization’s internal documents as “supreme leader,” decides what goes on the agenda.“I can’t think of any definitive principle of how you would do this,” says Tomlinson.

Sure enough, after I talked with Tomlinson and Rolhmann, FIFA released a statement on Friday morning:

“FIFA is convinced that, through football, particularly the FIFA World Cup and its international spotlight, we can achieve positive change in the world, but football cannot be seen as a solution for all issues, particularly those related to world politics. We have seen that the FIFA World Cup can be a force for good and FIFA believes this will be the case for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia."

Nick Clegg: Strip Russia of the World Cup

o-ENGLAND-WORLD-CUP-2018-570

Russia should be denied the right to host the World Cup following the shooting down of a Malaysia Airlines plane that killed more than 200 people including 10 Britons, Nick Clegg said.

The deputy prime minister has said that the EU needs to get tough on Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia.

He said the country should not be allowed to enjoy the prestige of hosting the 2018 World Cup after flight MH17 was shot down allegedly by Moscow-backed rebels.

"After this terrible, terrible downing of that jet, it is essential that the European Union gets tough on Vladimir Putin," Mr Clegg told the Sunday Times.

He said the "beautiful game" should not be "marred" by the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine and also called for Russia to forfeit its right to hold the Grand Prix in October.

Putin_2973380c

Mr Clegg said if Putin continued with his "belligerent behaviour" Russia should be stripped of the World Cup.

He added: "We've got to take tougher sanctions, but also we've got to make it quite clear that he cannot expect to get the privileges of being at the top table of world affairs if he's not prepared to play by the basic rules of world affairs."

Douglas Alexander, shadow foreign secretary, previously told the Telegraph that Fifa should be considering contingency plans now.

Britain has accused Russian separatists of planting evidence at the site of the MH17 crash in a bid to implicate the Ukraine. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office also said that Russia had made a number of claims blaming Ukraine for the attack which had no basis and no evidence.

British lawyers are currently preparing an action against Putin through the American courts which could see him facing a multi-million legal case over his alleged role in the shooting down of the plane.

Around 15 Russians and Ukrainians linked to the crash have already had their assets frozen by the EU and Russian banks are expected to be barred from accessing European capital markets.

Mr Clegg added: "We cannot impose sanctions on Vladimir Putin and imagine there's going to be no economic effect in this country or indeed other European Union member states.

"Let's remember, Russia needs the rest of the world, and particularly needs the European Union and access to its huge markets, much more than the European Union in the long run needs Putin."

What do you think? Do you hate Blatter? Do you want them to change the location of the next World Cup?

As your resident/designated Lavezzi Lass, I feel obligated to make this post...

Okay, so PSG is in a position where they HAVE to sell someone if they want to get Di Maria (who is also being linked with Man United but a lot of reports have been saying he's leaning towards PSG?). The most likely candidate would be Argentine sex symbol, Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Inter Milan has shown interest in the Argentine but PSG insists that he's not for sale. Lavezzi has also been linked with Chelsea, with the possibility of selling Torres in the process to make room for him. Chelsea's rival in this bid will be Liverpool who still have some #SuarezMoney left to spend, especially after Remy failed his medical. Liverpool could make an £18 million offer to PSG for Lavezzi.(I'm personally rooting for Liverpool in this one but that's just me!)

In other news, he posted a preview of his photoshoot with The Net Boutique on his social network sites and goddamn is he beautiful.

I humbly request a tag to be made for Lavezzi, por favor! :)

Several things Dunga does not like about Neymar and the current state of the Brazilian national team

$

There is much for new/old Brazil manager Dunga to do if he is going to restore Brazil from the embarrassment suffered at the end of the 2014 World Cup. So, like a Festivus celebration, Dunga has started off by airing his grievances about the team and star martyr Neymar. They are presented below in no particular order, because Dunga presumably finds each issue equally appalling.

Too much crying"A crying scene like that of the match against Chile looks bad. We are chauvinists, we have the idea that men don't cry," says Dunga, according to Sambafoot. The idea that men don't cry is both outdated and wrong, but Brazil did do an inordinate amount of it during the World Cup. During the national anthem, press conferences, after losses (and wins) — it went beyond endearing shows of emotional honesty and revealed a team cracking under the intense pressure of playing in front of home fans expecting nothing less than perfection at all times. Though Dunga's motivations here are backwards, a bit more emotional stability might not be a bad thing. If only to save the kitman from having to get mucus stains out of all those shirts.

Neymar and Dani Alves dying their hair during the tournament Dunga says he wouldn't have allowed it and added that they should have done it either before the tournament began or after it was over. Dunga seems to think that dying one's hair is a process roughly akin to securing a bank loan. But this shouldn't be surprising coming from a man who emerged from the womb with the same crew cut he has today.

Neymar's personally branded hats Dunga not only has a problem with Neymar's hair, but what he uses to cover it. Dunga seems to view the personally branded Neymar Jr. caps worn by the team's star during the tournament as reinforcing the problematic belief that Brazil existed solely to honor and support Neymar. In other words, Dunga probably despises Rio Ferdinand.

Brazil's many Neymar tributes Continuing from the last point, Dunga also did not approve of the many tributes to Neymar from his teammates after a back injury ended his World Cup in the quarterfinals. The message conveyed was ‘we lost a warrior’," says Dunga, because of course he uses military analogies for football. "But if we go to war we can’t keep crying. We can’t harm the soldier who takes their place.” Long story short, he's not going to be wearing any Forza Neymar caps to the stadium like Phil Scolari.

Everything else Neymar says and does Dunga didn't actually say this, but given everything he has said so far, it seems likely that Dunga is very eager to take Brazil's star down a peg or 20. And if he does, it probably won't take Brazil's federation and public to show Dunga how much more they care about Neymar than him. At this rate, Brazil probably would have been better off naming Grumpy Cat as the team's new manager.

LMAO, I don't know whether to laugh or cringe at this ... I mean, yeah there is too much focus on Neymar and his celebrity persona instead of the team, but he seems to really, really not like him

Carlos Tevez Father Kidnapped

The father of Carlos Tevez has been kidnapped and is being held for ransom, according to reports in Argentina.

The incident occurred at around 7am on Tuesday in Moron, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, when Juan Alberto Cabral’s car was intercepted, reports La Nación.

The criminals contacted the family in the city and made an initial request for ransom that was much lower than a second request a short time later, suggesting it wasn’t initially clear to them who they were holding.

Police are investigating the incident and the Juventus striker Tevez is understood to be travelling to Argentina to help deal with the matter.

source.

ETA: Reports are currently conflicting, with some suggesting that Juan Carlos Cabral was released, though Clarín claim that he is still being held with a ransom demanded. The newspaper writes that at least two calls have been made in which the kidnappers have demanded money for Cabral's release.

According to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, the kidnappers were not initially aware that Cabral was the father of one of Argentina's most famous footballers, though they raised their demands once they became aware of his connection to Tevez.

Arsenal To Lose A Player...While I Stan Jenks

Carl Jenkinson, the cutest boy in the world, might be leaving Arsenal. *bursts into tears*

The signs are already there. His best friend (is there no loyalty?) is even hanging out and *gasp* exchanging #banter with his replacement:

This post is basically a tribute to Jenks, my favourite Gunner. I hope the loan deal falls through or is a false rumour. Or please God - just let it be a loan and not a sale. Please I'll be so good.

MEET CARL JENKINSON ontd_football

Jenks is an Arsenal fan first, player after.

This is his childhood bedroom. Kindly note the Arsenal crest wall-paper, the t-shirts, the jerseys, the Highbury duvet, the room decor and the curtains:

.

His Mum must be, like, the nicest person ever...

Jenks is a lifelong Gunner from a family of Gunners. Here he is hugging his dad after the FA Cup final:

Carl Jenkinson hugging his dad after the FA Cup match!

And here is his grand-dad's memorial stone at Arsenal:

Carl Jenkinson (Arsenal’s biggest fan!) with the memorial stone for his grandfather, a fellow Gooner!

Jenks even hugs Wenger like I would - like a fan would. He puts his head on his shoulder like he's going to sob on it with gratitude. No manly snatch and grab. A REAL HUG. Jenks practically embodies the Wenger fanbase feeling for Wenger - occasional irritation mixed in with passionate love. I can't think of a Gooner who doesn't want Wenger for an uncle. You could tell Wenger stuff. You could confide in Wenger. Wenger would understand...

Jenks is a fan too. HE GETS IT.

Jenks' bestie is Alexander Oxlade Chamberlain. Their bromance is famous. So is their #banter. The best part of this video is Alex imitating how Jenks tries to pick up girls and when he writes up Jenks' singles ad. Also: they're genuinely sweet to each other. Alex is so thrilled when Jenks says "Denzel" would definitely play him in a movie of his life:

We also learn Jenks wants to go to space, while Alex would rather just "stay here and win a trophy with Arsenal to be fair."

Alex even stuck with Jenks during the infamous hair incident when Jenks was no longer taking advice from his "close friend and advisor."

They used to be inseparable:

But no sooner did the rumours start and the new "Chambo" arrived...well...it looks like Alex is already moving on...

:(

But I won't Jenks! I will always love you. And if this is a loan move, shine bright like a diamond and come back to your Jenny!

LVG IS SLICING OFF DEAD WEIGHT BEFORE IM READY TO LET GO

There are some people who feel that a part of the reason Sir Alex retired is because he knew he had gone as far as he could with the current Manchester United squad. Under Moyes, players had problems adjusting to his training and suffered injuries (and strained relationships: RVP-who went from 44 goals in 71 appearanced to...well, injured, sent off and disinterested).

So, this morning Van Gaal started off by saying what a lot of people were thinking who had watched the first two pre-season matches Man Utd played in: Luke Shaw isn't fit.

Let that sink in for a moment, our 19 yr old £28.5 mil signing who played 90 mins for England NT vs Costa Rica isn't fit enough

This brings into the many questions of how England is training their men for the World Cup and how Hodgson sucks and his position needs to be usurped, with some fans comparing how the Dutch were able to play for extra time in Brazil despite the heat.

LVG also added that he feels he 'inherited a broken squad from Fergie Moyes' and the changes he wants to make is continuing towards the selling of Fellaini, Kagawa, Nani and Anderson.

I'm not sure what to think about anything, I still have faith in Kagawa and Fellaini because their worst performances came after Moyes and they really need time to show Van Gaal what they can do. Most of my panic is being reserved for Chicharito because people are constantly talking about how he wants to sign somewhere else where he can start. I'm so sad.

Qatar World Cup: Fifa vice-president demands payment of migrant workers.

$

Well, after a month of World Cup fever, reality hit us hard. The last two weeks have been turbulent and violent and now, thanks to the great nation of Qatar, things have taken a turn for the (even more) depressing.

Migrant workers from India in Doha, Qatar. The mistreatment of migrant workers, including the late or non-payment of wages, has attracted severe criticism. Photograph: Pete Pattisson for the Guardian

A Fifa vice-president has demanded that Qatar ensures payment for a group of migrant workers who fitted out offices being used by its 2022 World Cup organising committee after the Guardian revealed some have gone unpaid for 13 months.

Jim Boyce, Britain's representative on Fifa's 24-person executive committee, said he was very concerned about the situation after repeated assurances from the organising committee that working conditions for World Cup workers would be safeguarded. "If the supreme committee is now using offices built by these people, they should immediately take steps with the Qatar government to make sure they are properly paid for the work they have done," said Boyce.

The revelation that more than a dozen men who fitted out lavish offices in Qatar's football HQ have not been paid for up to 13 months came just days after Fifa's president, Sepp Blatter, and its secretary general, Jérôme Valcke, met Qatar's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, to discuss World Cup preparations and "the ongoing reforms of labour rights to ensure the welfare of migrant workers".

The workers from Sri Lanka, India and Nepal worked on a £2.5m fitting of the 38th and 39th floor of the Bidda tower in Doha, which houses Qatar's supreme committee for delivery and legacy for the 2022 World Cup. The contractor, Lee Trading, was commissioned directly by the Qatar government, but failed to pay the workers, some of whom did not receive even modest salaries of £6 a day for more than a year.

They are now working illegally from cockroach-infested lodgings while the World Cup organising committee occupies the offices, sparking widespread concern.

"They should pay these workers," said Bert Schouwenburg, international officer of the GMB trade union. "The Qatari government has buried its head in the sand for long enough. It is time to address the worst and most extreme exploitation of workers anywhere in the world that is now taking place right under its nose."

In April, Jim Murphy, the shadow secretary of state for international development, met Hassan al-Thawadi, the chief executive of Qatar's World Cup organising committee, to discuss the kafala labour sponsorship systems that prevent workers changing jobs or leaving the country without permission from their employer. "When I travelled to Doha, I met the Qatar 2022 organisers on the 37th floor of the Bidda tower," Murphy said. "They made promises about workers and the reform of the kafala system. The news that the Bidda tower workers themselves haven't been paid makes those promises sound pretty empty."

Amnesty International came across the workers last year, before the Guardian established they had worked on offices used by the World Cup organisers. Last November, the human rights campaign group raised their plight in person with Qatar's prime minister, interior minister and labour minister. It wrote to the ministry of labour asking for the men to be paid, allowed to leave the country or find new jobs.

Nicholas McGeehan, Human Rights Watch's Qatar researcher, said: "If Qatar had announced some meaningful reforms, they would be able to defend themselves against these depressing revelations, because reforms need time to take effect in a sector beset by abuse and exploitation. … Qatar's inertia on labour reform should concern Fifa and their sponsors just as much as allegations of corruption in the bidding process."

This is just utterly depressing. As a South Asian, it just hurts even more for me. It's pointless asking questions like why FIFA is still allowing this go through. Because nothing has changed.

Steven Gerrard: It's probably been the worst three months of my life.

$
0
0

Steven Gerrard said he has endured the worst three months of his life since his slip against Chelsea cost Liverpool in the title race.

The Reds had been five points clear at the top of the table when they hosted second-placed Chelsea on April 27, but lost 2-0, with Gerrard's slip at the end of the first half allowing the visitors to gain control of the match.

A 3-3 draw in Liverpool's next game -- when Brendan Rodgers' men conceded three goals in the final 11 minutes against Crystal Palace -- enabled Manchester City to ultimately finish two points clear.

The Reds had been threatening to end a title drought dating back to 1990, and Gerrard confirmed in the Daily Telegraph that the Chelsea defeat marked the worst day of his life, adding: "It's probably been the worst three months of my life."

He continued: "When something like that happens you have to face it up and be man enough to take it on the chin. Accept it happened. You can't change it. I haven't lost my man at a set-piece. I haven't missed a penalty. I haven't made a bad pass or a mistake. That's why it was cruel. Every single person on the planet slips at some point in their life, whether it is on a set of stairs, on the floor or whatever.

"For me, it happened on the pitch at a really bad moment, but over the course of 38 games a lot happens for you and against you and that determines whether you win the league or not. That moment happened at a crucial time and I have to face that. And I will do."

Following the title disappointment, he captained England in Brazil as Roy Hodgson's men exited at the group stage after the nation's worst ever performance at a World Cup.

"Unfortunately I have had that tough time at club level at the end of the season and then I have gone into a World Cup hoping that it was going to go really well to help me get over it, but it backfired," he said. "I have had two massive, unbelievable lows in a short space of time, so it is a good test for me this season. Can I hit form after that? I believe that I can.

"Of course it is tough to take but you have to move on sharpish. We have to try to win the league, progress in the Champions League. There are massive games to look forward to.

"When you're the captain, you can't afford to be down, feel sorry for yourself and mope around. Everyone in this group looks to me to see what mood I'm in, so I have to shake it off quick. Every time I speak to the media it's going to be mentioned. I appreciate how big it is when you go out the World Cup and when you fall short after going close to the title. The level I play means it can be a cruel game.

"It's not always going to be celebrations, smiles and highs. There are always going to be heartbreaks and disappointments and the last three months have been a massive disappointment. At 34, there is no way I am going to let the last three months be the things I remember. It's important to finish on a high."

Gerrard has since retired from international duty but said Liverpool boss Rodgers had not influenced his decision.

"I used to love going down there and knowing I was going to be captain," he said. "To be fair to Brendan, when I had the chat with him, he said that if you want to carry on for England, I can tailor your Liverpool games. When he said that, it made me go 100 percent with my decision because I don't want my Liverpool games to be tailored. I still want to be available, I want to be fresh and play at a high level for Liverpool for certainly one more season.

"We will have to wait and see if there are any more after that. Of course I'm going to feel fresher and benefit from not playing. I'm also going to be more liked in my house with being at home more. That was one of my reasons -- to be around the girls a bit more.

"You sort of feel like you are lying to them all the time. It's difficult to say to them you are going away for four to six weeks. Then they are on the phone and on FaceTime saying they want you home. It does become difficult being away. I've done it for 14 years. I had to be fair to my family but also to Liverpool as well."

Alejandro Sabella, who steered Argentina to the World Cup final in Brazil, has decided to quit as national team coach.

Reports suggest the 59-year-old Sabella, whose side lost the Maracanã final to Germany 1-0 after extra time, has told FA president Julio Grondona that he is standing down.

Argentina begin preparations for their next major tournament, the 2015 Copa América in Chile, with a friendly against Germany in Düsseldorf on 3 September.

Sabella’s agent Eugenio López said two days before the World Cup final that the coach was unlikely to carry on and Sabella himself said on his return to Buenos Aires with the team that he was unsure he had the energy to give his best any longer.

“You have to fill the energy tank which sometimes gets empty. I have to think if I’m in condition to give 100%,” Sabella said two weeks ago.

The Argentinian, who took charge in August 2011, led his country to first place in the World Cup qualifiers with a fine attack, led by Lionel Messi, that top-scored with 35 goals in 16 matches.

His side won their three group matches in Brazil thanks mainly to four goals from Messi and Argentina’s progress through the knockout rounds to their first World Cup final for 24 years was marked more by sound tactics and a firm defence.

The AFA will have to name a new coach quickly given next month’s game in Germany and further friendlies with Brazil in China and against Hong Kong on a tour of Asia in October.

Media reports put José Pékerman, who steered Colombia to the quarter-finals in Brazil and was in charge of Argentina at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, among the favourites to succeed Sabella.

I didn't want him to go! He did an excellent job with the squad and no more of Papa Sabella means no more of this:

Drama As Keita Refuses To Shake Hands, Pepe Spits, Keita Throws Bottle

Oh dear oh dear.

In the understatement of the century, the Guardian reports:

The pair have had a troubled relationship ever since Keita’s time at Barcelona, when he accused Pepe of racism after a Spanish Supercup clásico in 2011.

Keita appears to still hold a grudge against the Real defender.
[Note: Really? Are we sure about that?] He saw him coming in the pre-match handshakes and blatantly refused to follow suit and threw a water bottle which narrowly missed the Portugal international.

There were conflicting reports all over twitter and tumblr yesterday. So here's the footage.

Football schedule

There was some talk about creating a schedule/calendar to keep up with football events/ligas/friendlies and such. Some volunteered to do just that.
But - it would be nice to have people participate, to add dates/schedules of their favourite club/s

So - who would participate?

Would it be possible to make some kind of sticky post for this?

The Belgium international is set to return to Goodison Park in a permanent deal after failing to become a first-team regular at Chelsea since arriving from Genk in 2011

Everton are set to confirm the €23 million signing of Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku.

Earlier in July that the Merseyside club made a breakthrough in negotiations with the Stamford Bridge club to seal a permanent deal for the 21-year-old.

Lukaku was keen to return to Goodison Park this summer and the Toffees eventually agreed two deals with Chelsea, with Jose Mourinho undecided on whether to allow Lukaku to leave permanently or on loan.

But the striker is now poised to complete his permanent switch to Everton and will return to Merseyside on a five-year deal.
