Brilliance from Bieber.

He knows what he's doing.

Yesterday, we saw a flash of genius from Bieber. It was unexpected and amazing. You have to applaud him for this one.

And it was this guy!

JustinChristopher Bieber. Justin wishes.

Got you, didn't I?

We were treated to a brilliant goal last week. Sadly not a diving header from the half-way line – we’re still eagerly awaiting one of those – but this effort from Christopher Bieber in the Bavarian regional league was at the complete other end of the spectrum, but no less impressive.

In Friday’s 4-0 victory over Wacker Burghausen, Bieber opened the scoring for his side Wurzburger Kickers in the 38th minute with this creative effort from just a couple of yards out.

A low cross was deflected into Bieber’s path by an unfortunate defender and the striker, seemingly laying stricken on the floor, somehow managed to get his head to the ball and divert it past goalkeeper Alexander Eiban, who spectacularly failed to stop it crossing the line.

Bayern reach agreement with Pepe Reina.

Our prayers have been heard: New rule will stop players from playing if they lose consciousness

Players who lose consciousness in English top-flight matches next season will not be allowed to return to the field of play under new rules introduced by the Premier League and Football Association to limit the risks associated with head injuries. Players who have not lost consciousness will still have to undergo an on-field or touchline assessment before being allowed to continue.

The FA has launched a campaign, backed by the Premier League, highlighting a set of guidelines that should be followed after a player suffers a head injury to ensure a safe return to action over a period of time. Spurs were heavily criticised last season when their goalkeeper Hugo Lloris persuaded physios to allow him to continue at Goodison Park despite having lost consciousness.

There were also a number of high-profile incidents at the World Cup in which players continued to play on after similar knocks. In Uruguay’s 2-1 win over England in the group stage, Álvaro Pereira described his injury as like the “lights going out” when Raheem Sterling’s knee hit his head on 61 minutes. After arguing with the team physician, he was allowed to finish the game.

Germany’s Christoph Kramer was also reintroduced to the game after taking a heavy blow to the head in the World Cup final. He was eventually replaced with the referee, Nicola Rizzoli, saying after the match: “Shortly after the blow, Kramer came to me asking: ‘Ref, is this the final?’”

There are serious risks involved with suffering a second impact if concussed and Dr Ian Beasley, the FA’s chief medical officer, hopes managers and players in England can learn to understand when a player could be in danger. He said: “Managers, players and clubs need to understand the risks associated with head injuries. The advice of medical professionals is key in this area, and whilst we have developed processes to deal with many types of injury this is an area that has perhaps needed some more scrutiny.

“We have worked closely with the stakeholders to develop these new guidelines and the message is clear for players; listen to medical advice and take no chances – stop playing and take your time to recover.

“We are committed to working with Fifa to understand the universal impact of head injury in football. We will ensure that it is high on Fifa’s agenda and will be discussing options for a new research program me with Fifa.”

Let's have a little fun at the expense of Thumbsy (that's Louis van Gaal for you), shall we?

The Guardian hosts The Gallery where readers get a chance to poke a little at various football topics and the star of this week's slideshow is Louis van Gaal.

Here's a preview:

'Louis van Gaal makes it clear it he will not be influenced by any past manager of Manchester United,' honks Gerard Parker.

To see the rest, click here: http://www.theguardian.com/football/gallery/2014/aug/05/the-gallery-louis-van-gaal

And check out The Gallery's page. It's a feast of hilarity. Examples include: Miguel Herrera as Tyrion Lannister, Floppin' Robben as Joffrey, Andrea Pirlo as a ballerina and Hulk as well, The Incredible Hulk (and also Hulk Hogan).

Another example:

'Dr Ochoapuss,' parps John O'Donnell

Oh, and if you love Manchester's greatest musical import, The Smiths (or don't) and Thumbsy, here's something to enjoy:

*To be sung at all matches against Manchester City.

EDIT: The oft-excellent Grantland has a Van Gaalagy 101 where his looks are described as, "like a cross between a weirdly angry pastry chef and a weirdly angry pastry."

I still think he looks like a thumb.

Do we even have a tag for Thumbsy? He certainly needs one.

2014 World Cup Claims Another Career

As written by Patrick Imoh: After 25 years handing out bookings and overseeing some of the biggest matches the sport has to offer, arguably the most recognizable official in European football is blowing the final whistle on his career.

The Premier League announced Wednesday that Howard Webb is retiring, turning in his refereeing job in favor of assuming a newly-created position that will allow him to oversee the performance an development of the league’s officials.

Webb, who was in charge of both the 2010 World Cup and Champions League finals, has been named the Technical Director of Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL).

In a statement from the league, Webb’s new role is described as one that will allow him to manage a training program geared towards “the successful development” of referees in the lower leagues, with the ultimate goal of getting them to the top-flight of English football.

Understandably, the 43-year-old is looking forward to the new role:

"I am very excited to start this new chapter in my career after a wonderfully rewarding 25 years on the pitch,” Webb said. “I have spent over a decade with the best seat in the house for Barclays Premier League matches, been lucky enough to be involved in nine UEFA and FIFA tournaments, and taken charge of the UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Cup finals.

Refereeing has given me so much and it’s important that match officials who have had the rewards remain in the game to pass on their knowledge. I also have much more to learn about the business of refereeing and the best place for me to do that is with PGMOL. It’s an incredibly positive working environment and we all have a common goal of improving refereeing."

Transfer rumors about a guy with a YNWA tattoo

Mirror is reporting Agger has begged Brendan Rodgers to sell him and that Barcelona is interested:

Liverpool transfers: Tearful Daniel Agger has BEGGED boss Brendan Rodgers to sell him

Daniel Agger has had a tearful heart-to-heart with Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers and asked to leave the club, writes Darren Lewis.

The distraught 29-year-old defender - the Reds’ vice-captain - made his emotional request in a dressing-room exchange during their recent pre-season tour of America.

Agger is now set to be sold, with Barcelona the favourites to land him.

A move to the Nou Camp for the £12million-rated Dane would pave the way for Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen to go to Manchester United - his preferred destination.

Agger, who made just 23 appearances in all competitions last season, is understood to have told Rodgers that he fears he is fighting a losing battle to win back a regular place in the side.

The Liverpool boss is understood to have been sympathetic to the player, who then broke down and had to be consoled by senior members of the squad.

Agger then asked to be allowed to leave the tour and was given permission by Rodgers to fly home.

The centre-back, signed by Brondby in January 2006, replaced Jamie Carragher as Liverpool’s current vice-captain last year but found himself on the fringes of their title bid.

And the £20m arrival of Croatia centre-back Dejan Lovren from Southampton has created even further doubt over his chances of winning back his starting place.

Mirror Sport understands Agger is desperate for a move away to be concluded by the end of this summer's transfer window.

As things stand, the player is not in Rodgers’ plans for the start of the new season.

It's all a far cry from 2012, when Agger signed a new contract tying him to the Merseysiders until 2016 weeks after getting YNWA - for the club's You'll Never Walk Alone motto - tattooed across the knuckles of his right hand.

“I’m proud to be here, and I think my knuckles show that,” he said at the time.

“I’d thought about it for a long time. As I said, I feel a part of this club and I feel a part of this city. I’ve been here so long now, so it was an easy decision.”

Last month though, Agger told a Danish newspaper: "It is no secret that I had problems last season and I am considering things. How things turned out last season is not acceptable for me.

"I am here now and it is up to me to show the coach that I should play.

"Many things can happen in football and I do not want to exclude anything."

DailyStar says that Brondby, Agger's former Denmark club, says that Arsenal wants him

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger keen on audacious bid for Liverpool star Daniel Agger

That's according to reports in Denmark that claim his former club Brondby are facing added competition from the Gunners for the Anfield outcast.

Brondby chairman Jan Bech Andersen revealed earlier this month that the Danish club were prepared to do everything in their power to re-sign the defender Liverpool.

"We will work really, really hard to secure Daniel but as he has also said, when he was here with Liverpool, the timing has to be right," he said.

The Denmark international, who came through the ranks at Brondby, is currently facing an uncertain future at Anfield following the £20m arrival of Southampton centre-back Dejan Lovren.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has previously insisted he has no intention of allowing Agger to leave this summer, however the 29-year-old made it clear at the end of last season that he is unwilling to play second fiddle at the club.

"It is no secret that I had problems last season and I am considering things," Agger said.

"How things turned out last season is not sustainable for me. I am here now and it is up to me to show the coach that I should play."

Wenger is reportedly preparing to pip Brondby to the Denmark international as a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen, who is set to leave the club this summer.

Barcelona are currently believed to be leading the race for the Gunners skipper, with Manchester United also understood to be interested in the centre back.

Neymar could be fit for season opener

The forward was expected to miss the start of the season with Barcelona because of his back injury but the youngster passed a medical and could be ready to feature against Elche

Barcelona forward Neymar could be ready for the start of the season after passing a medical on Wednesday.

The Brazil international sustained a fractured vertebra in his country's quarter-final win over Colombia after a robust challenge from Juan Camilo Zuniga.

With initial projections suggesting Neymar could miss up to six weeks of action, the 22-year-old was considered a doubt for Barcelona's league opener against Elche on August 23.

However, the club confirmed on Wednesday that Neymar, along with three team-mates who appeared in the World Cup, had passed his medical and would now face "intense training".

A statement from the Catalan giants read: "The four World Cup semi-finalists, Leo Messi, Javier Mascherano, Dani Alves and Neymar, who trained with their colleagues on Tuesday, returned to the club for their medical tests.

"They all passed with flying colours and are now set for three weeks of intense training in the build-up to the start of official matches in three weeks’ time."

Defender Adriano (abnormal heart rate) is continuing his recovery, while midfielder Xavi and new signing Jeremy Mathieu went through seperate training exercises.

Pep Guardiola wants 'revenge' for MLS All-Stars' tackling in Bayern defeat.

Pep Guardiola refused to shake hands with counterpart Caleb Porter after his Bayern Munich team lost 2-1 to the Major League Soccer All-Stars on Wednesday, apparently upset about some heavy tackling in the game.

The Bayern manager wagged his finger angrily toward the MLS All-Stars bench as he walked off after the game without the traditional handshake, and ignored Porter when he tried to make contact as the Spanish coach saluted his own players on the field.

Guardiola refused to talk about it after the game, simply saying he didn’t see Porter.

“It doesn’t matter. It’s happened the way it is,” Guardiola said. “We tried to play and we did. Congratulations to MLS for this victory. I hope they are going to invite us next year to try and make revenge and I hope to prepare a little bit better.

“Now, we will be sure [about] what was going on. We will prepare much better, that we will do it. I hope our invitation is coming.”

During the game, Guardiola complained to the refereeing staff and made gestures toward Porter after a tough tackle by Osvaldo Alonso. Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger then had to leave the game shortly before the end after another hard challenge.

“We certainly didn’t mean anything negative,” Porter said. “Our players have nothing but the utmost respect for Bayern.”

The All-Stars striker Landon Donovan, who scored the winning goal, told ESPN:

“I understand he doesn’t want his players to get hurt. They’re not great tackles but they’re not the worst tackles I’ve ever seen and I hope Schweini’s not hurt. I’m not sure why they’re going after the officials.”

Donovan, of the LA Galaxy, scored the winner when he downed a cross on his chest in the 70th minute and beat the Germany World Cup goalkeeper Manuel Neuer from about 10 yards out.

Bayern’s new signing, Robert Lewandowski, had opened the scoring with a spectacular volley from the edge of the area early in the first half before the New York Red Bulls striker Bradley Wright-Philips equalised early in the second.

The Bundesliga champions had seven members of the World Cup-winning German national team, but most of them remained on the bench until about the final 10 minutes. In the 86th minute the Dutch star Arjen Robben came on and Bayern ended the game with almost a full-strength line-up, but the All-Stars held on to record the win.

Guardiola said he was only playing his World Cup players sparingly to freshen them up for the approaching German and European seasons and he was true to his word. None of them started on Wednesday.

Troll Müller was also the subject of the picture of the day:

Pep stealing the team's thunder as usual. Is it too soon to say that he's a household name in America now? Who knew a harmless friendly could turn out to be so messy? Every major news outlet has covered it.

Also, it's not mentioned that they apparently shook hands later.

Landon Donovan will retire at the end of the 2014 MLS season according to Taylor Twellman. Donovan, who turned 32 in March, has been with the LA Galaxy since 2005. Donovan has scored 105 goals in 229 appearances for the club.

All of this is from multiple sources and nothing is concrete but basically Twellerman aired it out. I'll update.

Falcao to Madrid? Monaco doesn't think so.

Monaco are confident Radamel Falcao will remain at the club despite Real Madrid continuing to be linked to the prolific forward.

Falcao, 28, has been strongly tipped to follow the path trodden by James Rodriguez earlier this summer between the principality and the Spanish capital, despite having signed a five-year contract with Monaco only last summer.

That speculation only intensified after his agent, Jorge Mendes, was spotted earlier this week meeting Madrid president Florentino Perez, who has publicly stated his admiration for Falcao.

Sidelined following a ruptured knee ligament sustained in January, the Colombia international made a successful return to action at the recent Emirates Cup, scoring the only goal in his club's win over hosts Arsenal.

Monaco sporting director Vadim Vasilyev told L'Equipe despite having had close, recent links to Madrid in relation to the sale of James, Falcao's name never came up in talks.

"I have met Real officials many times, and the Falcao dossier was never discussed. There are no talks, and we really are counting on him. I think he's happy to come back from injury and re-find his teammates," Vasilyev said, adding he had watched Falcao's return to action in north London with interest.

"He confirmed that he's a great player, a great goal scorer. He missed the World Cup, it was difficult for him psychologically. But he's a strong personality, and I hope it'll be his season at Monaco."

Vasilyev added he expects Falcao to flourish under new coach Leonardo Jardim with the striker not having always seen eye-to-eye with former boss, Claudio Ranieri.

"He had some difficult times, but the page has been turned, also thanks to the new staff," he added.

Promising centre-back Nicolas Isimat-Mirin had been expected to leave Monaco, but missed his plane bound for Saint-Etienne, who are hoping to sign the 22-year-old.

The former Valenciennes FC defender reportedly apologised repeatedly for the logistical snafu, and is due to talk to Saint-Etienne coach Christophe Galtier about the situation.

Isimat-Mirin, who has failed to establish himself at the Stade Louis II since arriving last summer, is said to still have his heart set on joining the ten-time L1 champions, despite an approach from Crystal Palace.

I was reading an article in the Guardian about women's football and the comments made steam come out of my ears.
So in order to calm down a bit, here is a post about the draws for the final qualification rounds for the CL and the EL.

Are your favourite teams still in it? Will eternal-fourth Arsenal make it to the group stages again?

The draw ceremony starts at 12,00 CET for CL and 13,00 CET for EL, which is in about 50 minutes.

Champions League:
There is a champions route and a league route, there are 5 seeded and 5 unseeded teams in each route and they will be drawn against each other.

There is still a little bit of doubt around Legia because of a egilibilty row around a player, if I understood correctly. So Celtic might get back in.

There is also a draw for the Europa League but I don't understand how it works. It includes teams like Spurs, PSV and Inter.

I saw the Vermaelen rumor was already on this list. The Süddeutsche Zeitung has it online as well. So, Barcelona?

And Contento (FC Bayern München) will join Bordeaux as it seems. There were rumors about him leaving the club last year, so this is no surprise. Wouldn't have thought of Bordeaux, though. I don't have a problem with Contento - he is a Bayern youngster from the get go - but I am not sorry to see his unfortunate hair leave. (*gg*)

I've been a member for years, but never made a post. Just thought I'd share this, as I thought ya'll would get a kick out of it.

Hard to say what my favorite part is, but as a gooner, I do love when he goes to the Arsenal bar in Spurs jersey.

Also, I don't see any tags for Tim Howard, how is this possible? (unless I'm completely blind, it is possible)
