Final results excluding Sporting vs Maribor-- will update when I get the other graphic, k?News Round UpMessi breaks Raúl's Champions League goal record![]()
Lionel Messi has surpassed Raúl González's record as the top scorer in UEFA Champions League history in FC Barcelona's game at APOEL FC.
The forward scored his 72nd goal in the competition proper, group stage to final, 38 minutes in at APOEL to put Barcelona 2-0 up, diverting Rafinha's effort past goalkeeper Urko Pardo. He subsequently added two more.
While it took Raúl 142 UEFA Champions League outings to run up his 71 goals, Messi's appearance against APOEL was his 91st in the competition. Cristiano Ronaldo, set to face FC Basel 1893 on Wednesday with Real Madrid CF, has 70 strikes in 107 tournament matches.
Messi's goal also ensured he overtook Raúl and Ronaldo, until tonight the joint-top European Cup scorers alongside the Argentinian. Whereas Messi and Raúl's goals all came in the competition proper, Ronaldo found the net for Manchester United FC in the third qualifying round back in 2005. In terms of UEFA club competitions, Raúl remains out in front with 77 strikes, two ahead of Messi and four of Ronaldo.
who is better? this will run and runManchester City v Bayern Munich: five talking points1) Manuel Pellegrini at the crossroadsSergio Agüero’s late, late show has given the Manchester City manager a lifeline but whether or not his team qualify for the knockout stage he should still be under serious scrutiny for going into the final group match with only five points and this victory being their sole win.
The Chilean professed contentment with a summer strengthening drive that added Eliaquim Mangala, Fernando, Willy Caballero, Frank Lampard and Bacary Sagna, so he cannot use the excuse of poor recruitment cited by Roberto Mancini when his City outfit failed in the term after they became champions.
In the final analysis, City contrived to rescue a last-gasp victory after being 1-0 up against Bayern Munich’s 10-men. This is just not good enough. But then neither has Pellegrini’s management throughout the phase.
2) Bayern Munich more than a class above the English championsThe Germans may have been hampered by having to play nearly 70 minutes with only 10 men following Mehdi Benatia’s red card, yet Pep Guardiola’s men actually improved following his dismissal.
Quite how Joe Hart – the still questionable City No1 – allowed Xabi Alonso’s pea-roller from a 20-yard free-kick to beat him is a mystery.
There may be further argument about the keeper’s positioning for Robert Lewandowski’s header that went beyond him from the range of the penalty spot. In little doubt, though, is the sheer class of Bayern and how far below is the strata City continue to occupy in comparison to the continent’s finest sides.
more hereIn defence of Manchester City and their European nights, it's not really a team that has supporters who have grown up being used to them, compared to say, Manchester United or Liverpool who crave those things. I really think they have to 'grow' into it. That point was petty, tbh. If I lived in Manchester, I'd goClinical Chelsea sweep Schalke aside
Ramires came on as a substituteChelsea FC will go through to the round of 16 as Group G winners after equalling their record UEFA Champions League away victory at FC Schalke 04.
The Premier League leaders scored with virtually their first attack of the game as Eden Hazard threaded the ball through for Diego Costa. The Spain striker cut inside before seeing his attempt well saved by Ralf Fährmann, but the resulting corner proved fatal for the hosts as John Terry rose to head in Cesc Fàbregas's delivery.
Conceding just two minutes in had an obvious effect on Schalke, who allowed the visitors to stroke the ball around at will. It took an important challenge from Felipe Santana to prevent Costa from racing through again and, though Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting's deflected effort looped onto the bar at the other end, Chelsea's second was only a matter of time.
It arrived on 29 minutes as the result of a sharp move involving Willian and Hazard. The Belgian's return pass afforded the Brazilian time to drive his finish under Fährmann. The Blues might have had four or five by the break had Costa not slipped at the vital moment after seizing on a Marco Höger back pass and rounding Fährmann, who showed good reactions moments later to foil Oscar. Instead they had to settle for three as Jan Kirchhoff rose to nod firmly into his own net from another Fàbregas corner.

Slimani made it 3Sporting Clube de Portugal moved up into second place in UEFA Champions League Group G by easing past NK Maribor on an eventful evening in Lisbon.
Sporting began the evening third in the standings but quickly seized control and Carlos Mané handed them an early advantage that Nani increased just past the half-hour. However, they were given a jolt just before the interval when Jefferson put through his own goal but, after a lengthy delay to the start of the second half, sealed the win through Islam Slimani's composed volley.
Sporting had already tested visiting goalkeeper Jasmin Handanović through Nani's free-kick by the time they broke the deadlock in the tenth minute. Jefferson was the architect, advancing from left-back to deliver a perfect low ball across the face of goal for Mané to tap in at the far post.
Sporting's other full-back then almost got in on the act, Cédric unleashing a fierce shot from the edge of the area. Handanović dived to his left to tip the ball behind, but could do nothing as Nani extended the lead in the 35th minute. Mané danced along the box and found Nani, who cut inside three tackles. Though his initial effort was blocked, the ball dropped kindly for him to beat three more players at close quarters before smashing in.

Edinson Cavani opened and completed the scoring with Davy Klaassen making things interesting midway through the second half, cancelling out the Uruguayan's opener before Zlatan Ibrahimovic restored PSG's lead.
With Barcelona also victorious in Cyprus, the winners of the section will now be decided in a head-to-head in Spain in the final round of matches, when Ajax need to avoid defeat at home to APOEL to secure third.
Although they could not catch either their opponents or Barca, the stakes were still high for Ajax, who are in contention for a place in the Europa League.

When you're right, you're right. But still go, Agüero!
I hope this is not true, but Neuer can be sassy to the point of rude. I can believe he said this.

Respect to these players from Atlético Madrid. Idek what they breed in them over there, but they have the grit to just power through everything. From Agüero to (baby) Manquillo, you do that, Atléti, you do that
This referee was throwing down cards as if he were playing blackjack at a casino. But fair play to the ref, the game play flowed smoothly, and his decisions were quick and sure.
